HP splits printer, PC units

PALO ALTO, Calif., June 14 (UPI) -- California's Hewlett-Packard Co. has separated its personal computer and printer units just five months after combining them.

New chief executive Mark Hurd took the action just five months after former head Carly Fiorina merged the units, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.

While some investors have long wanted HP to sell its profitable printer business, Hurd's action is not seen as a precursor to such an action, observers said.

In a related development, Hurd named Todd Bradley, former head of handheld-computer maker palmOne Inc., as executive vice president of HP's personal-systems group, which includes personal computers, handhelds, monitors and workstations.
