Japan calls for more free trade agreements

SINGAPORE,, Singapore, April 29 (UPI) -- Japan needs to sign more free trade agreements to keep its economy competitive, economic minister Heizo Takenaka said Friday in Singapore.

In a speech on the second day of the World Economic Forum's Asia roundtable, Takenaka said embracing the global markets was key for Japan to retain its competitive edge.

His comments were echoed by Singapore's Trade Minister Lim Hng-Kiang, also at the conference, who pointed out that "participating in trade allows you to participate in the entire value chain so that you can fit the part where your country has the highest competitive advantage."
