Casino builder eyes rail link to Chicago

BELOIT, Wis., March 30 (UPI) -- A developer planning a casino for two Wisconsin Indian bands has proposed a passenger rail link connecting Beloit, Wis., to Rockford, Ill., and Chicago.

Kurt Carlson presented the idea at a meeting of Beloit city officials and a representative of the St. Croix and Bad River banks of the Chippewa, which will own the casino, the Rockford Register-Star reported Wednesday.

Rockford is about 90 miles northwest of Chicago and Beloit is about 30 miles north of Rockford.

But details of how the rail system would be built, its cost or who would pay for it were not provided, the newspaper said.

Carlson said his train plan is just in its preliminary phase.

Andrew Janke, Beloit's economic development director, said his city has long been interested in developing a passenger rail link to Chicago. Beloit also has been studying another plan to extend Metra service from Harvard to Clinton, Wis.
