Singapore to spend up to $80M to host IMF

SINGAPORE, March 9 (UPI) -- Singapore will spend about $80 million to host the International Monetary Fund and World Bank's annual meetings in September 2006, Business Times reported.

The city-state is expecting more than 16,000 visitors -- among them heads of state, top businesspeople and luminaries -- in the biggest conference it has ever hosted.

The last IMF meeting held in Asia was in Hong Kong in 1997.

To ensure security, the government will deploy an unspecified number of police officers and members of the armed forces.
