U.S. likes U.S., Italian and French wine

ROCHESTER, N.Y., Jan. 14 (UPI) -- American, Italian, and French wines are the most popular among Americans, a poll by Harris of Rochester, N.Y., shows.

However, many respondents said they would be willing to buy wine from other countries.

Almost all American wine drinkers polled (91 percent) said they sometimes buy or drink American wine; 44 percent sometimes buy or drink Italian wine, and 40 percent buy or drink French wine. Also popular are Australian wine (bought or consumed by 32 percent of respondents), German wine (23 percent) and Chilean wine (16 percent). Spanish and Portguese wines were not included in the survey.

Many respondents also said they would be willing to try wine from countries which sell relatively little wine in the United States, such as Poland, Bolivia and Israel.

Harris did an online survey between Dec. 8 and Dec. 15, 2004, of 1,323 U.S. adults aged 21 and over who buy or drink wine.

But most Americans don't buy wine very often. Nearly three-quarters of people who said they buy wine said that they, or people in their household, only buy a bottle of wine once a month or less.
