CHICAGO, Jan. 7 (UPI) -- The Daily News, New York's largest tabloid newspaper, has successfully wooed editor-in-chief Michael Cooke from the Chicago Sun-Times.
Cooke, 51, a native of England, will leave the Chicago tabloid Feb. 11 after two years at the helm of one of the nation's largest newspapers, Cooke said in a memo to the paper's staff.
With a daily circulation of 715,000 the New York Daily News is the sixth-largest U.S. newspaper.
Cooke is credited with helping reinvigorate the Sun-Times before it was hit by a circulation scandal and drawn into a legal battle with the parent Hollinger International Inc. over alleged looting of hundreds of millions in profits by former newspaper magnate Conrad Black and a top aide.
"His skill and enthusiasm are well-known throughout throughout the industry, and he will bring even more tabloid expertise to our already highly-skilled staff," said Mortimer B. Zuckerman, Daily News chairman and publisher.
The Daily News has not had a chief editor for more than a year since the departure of Edward Kosner.
