United reaches labor pact with pilots

CHICAGO, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- United Airlines has reached a tentative contract with the Air Line Pilots Association giving the troubled carrier wage and benefit cuts from pilots.

This fall, United sought $191.1 million in givebacks from its 6,400 pilots as part of a $725 million concessions package it said it needed to exit two years of bankruptcy proceedings.

Details of the agreement negotiated with the union will not be available until the proposal is considered at a meeting of ALPA leaders in Chicago Thursday, the New York Times said.

United must negotiate more concessions from flight attendants, ramp workers, customer service representatives and reservations agents.

The carrier was to resume talks with the machinists union in Millbrea, Calif., south of San Francisco Tuesday, CBS MarketWatch said.

UAL Corp., United's parent, imposed pay cuts of 4 percent to 8 percent on non-union, salaried and management employees Monday to save about $112 million.
