Many British women make far less than men

LONDON, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- Many British women are still being left behind men in the pay stakes, a report said Thursday.

Statistics from Incomes Data Services say the divide between average hourly earnings of male and female full-time workers was 19.5 percent last year across the United Kingdom, the Scotsman reported.

Revised figures for Scotland are expected to be in line with the others.

Despite the Equal Pay Act of 1970, the struggle for equality in wages has gone on for decades and there's no apparent end in sight to the struggle.

Some women missed out by being employed on jobs considered "women's work" for which there was no male equivalent.

IDS found that the gap failed to close as quickly over the six years to 2003 as earlier data had expressed, narrowing by 1.7 percent rather than 2 percent.
