NEW YORK, Oct. 18 (UPI) -- U.S. stocks rose Monday despite disappointing third quarter earnings reports and climbing crude oil prices.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 22.94 or 0.23 percent to 9,956.32 on a volume of 1.38 billion shares traded. The Nasdaq composite gained 25.02 or 1.31 percent to 1,936.52, and the Standard & Poor's 500 edged up 5.82 or 0.53 percent to 1,114.02.
Dow component 3M reported sales and earnings that grew from a year earlier, but missed expectations, CNN said. The company also said fourth-quarter results will miss expectations.
Toy maker Mattel said third-quarter profit fell 5.2 percent and rival Hasbro also announced weak results from declining sales.
The 10-year Treasury note was up 3/32 point, or 93.75 cents, for each $1,000 invested, for a 4.05 percent yield.
The dollar rose to 109.27 yen from 109.22; the euro rose against the dollar to $1.25 from $1.2475.
Tokyo's Nikkei 225 closed down 17.33 points or 0.2 percent to 10,965.62. London's FTSE 100 settled at 4,626.60, up 3.90 or 0.08 percent.
