US Airways pilots agree on pay cut

ARLINGTON, Va., Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Pilots for bankrupt US Airways agreed Friday on yet another pay cut, this one for about $300 million in pay and benefits reductions.

Unions and corporate officials had met throughout the week in Pittsburgh and Charlotte, N.C., on the cost-cutting deal, a key part of a restructuring plan the airline says it needs to help it emerge from its second bankruptcy in 25 months, the Washington Post reported Friday.

The deal covers 3,200 pilots, the carrier said.

The pilots' union had wanted to seal the deal before the Arlington, Va., airline goes to federal bankruptcy court Thursday to ask a judge to impose a temporary pay cut.

US Airways is seeking a court-ordered pay cut of 23 percent for all unions that have not already reached agreements as part of the airline's effort to cut $950 million. The company continues negotiations with the Association of Flight Attendants and Communications Workers of America. Talks with the International Association of Machinists are scheduled to resume next week.
