Feds press probe of Boeing-Pentagon link

WASHINGTON, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- U.S. investigators looking into Boeing's hire of a Pentagon procurement official turned a spotlight on the current head of the firm's military division.

Darlene Druyun, who had served as the Air Force's No. 2 acquisition official, began working at Boeing in January 2003. Then, last November, she and Boeing's chief financial officer at the time, Michael Sears, were fired for trying to cover up what turned out to be illegal employment negotiations.

The scandal also brought down then chief executive Phil Condit.

All along, the man who runs Boeing's $27 billion military-and-space unit, James Albaugh, has said he had no role in recruiting or hiring Druyun.

Federal prosecutors are not so sure, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday. They are looking into company e-mails and other information indicating Albaugh was involved to some extent in the chain of events that led to Druyun's hiring.

The details indicate Albaugh was aware of, and participated in, job-related contacts with Druyun even as he negotiated across the table from her for important Boeing business with the Air Force.
