U.S. stocks close higher on drop in oil

NEW YORK, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- A sharp decline in oil prices helped push Wall Street higher Friday, though volume was light on a dearth of corporate and economic news.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed up 69.32 or 0.69 percent to 10,110.14; the Nasdaq added 18.12 or 1 percent to 1,838.01, and the Standard & Poor's 500 gained 7.12 or 0.65 percent to 1,098.35.

Crude oil futures pulled back after flirting with $50 a barrel to close at $47.86, off 84 cents.

Overseas, Japan's Nikkei 225 closed down 14.39 points or 0.1 percent at 10,889.14. In London, the FTSE 100 closed at 4,369.20, after rising 6.60 or 0.15 percent.

Bonds were mixed with the 10-year Treasury note rising less than 1/8 point, or $1.25 for each $1,000 invested. The yield fell to 4.23 percent.

The dollar was mixed, trading at 109.13 yen, down from 109.37 yen late Thursday in New York. The euro fell to $1.2313 from $1.2370 in the previous session.
