GM recalls 200,000 Buicks for headlamps

DETROIT, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- General Motors Corp. wants to replace the headlamps on nearly 200,000 1999 Buick Regal and Buick Century sedans because they may not be bright enough.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Buick would replace low-beam bulbs on 199,793 5-year-old passenger cars because reduced illumination could prevent drivers from reading overhead street signs when driving at night.

The recall is expected to begin in September.

GM dealers will supply free replacement low-beam headlamp bulbs to owners of Buick Regal and Buick Century sedans. The replacement GM bulb number is 89024715.

Federal auto safety regulars ordered the recall earlier this week after determining in 1999 the headlamps of the recalled Buicks did not meet government safety standards.

Owners of affected Buick Regal and Century models can contact GM at 1-866-608-8080.
