Dirceu: Brazil needs greater development

BRASILIA, Brazil, July 15 (UPI) -- Brazil needs to spend more on social programs, a presidential adviser said following a U.N. study saying Brazil slipped in the rankings for development.

The study released Thursday said Brazil's Human Development Index, or HDI, dropped from 65th place worldwide to 72nd.

"We should look to the future and take this (report) as another sign that country needs urgently ... to invest in social, sanitation, living and transport programs and to create jobs and distribute wealth," said Presidential Chief of Staff Jose Dirceu.

The HDI is a composite indicator taking into account such factors as education, average income and GDP.
