Miami woman sues Club Med over Cuban beach

MIAMI, July 9 (UPI) -- A Cuban-born woman living in Miami has sued Club Med, claiming the French resort chain built on land confiscated from her family.

"I don't see any reason why Club Med should be there," Elvira de la Vega Glen told the Miami Herald Friday. "They didn't buy it from me. What would you think if someone just went ahead and built something on your land without asking? I'm furious."

Club Med opened the 337-room hotel on Varadero Beach in 1997 and sold it last year to a Spanish hotel company, Grupo Pinero.

Stuart Newberger, Glen's lawyer, says Club Mediterranee Group can be sued under the Trading with the Enemy Act because the company has substantial assets in Florida.

Glen, 95, inherited the property in Havana from her mother in 1943 and lost it in 1959 when she fled Cuba after Fidel Castro came to power. Her sister, now dead, bequeathed her half share to Glen's 60-year-old son, who is also a plaintiff.

Mother and son are also considering legal action against two chains that built hotels on another piece of Glen's property,
