Bird flu won't hit Thai economy hard

BANGKOK, July 9 (UPI) -- Bank of Thailand Governor Pridiyathorn Devakula said Thursday the new bird flu outbreak would have minimal negative impact on the country's economy.

"The value of exported chicken accounted for only one percent of the country's total exports and therefore the impact from this round of the bird flu epidemic should be minimal," he said.

He added that over the past four months the country's exports grew by as much as 20 percent, Business Day reported.

He said the epidemic did cause some negative effects on the country's economy in the first quarter of the year, but this bout of the disease should not be as serious.

He believed the outbreak would not weight on economic growth, which is projected at 6.5 percent this year by the Office of National Economic and Social Development Board.
