Memory flaw in 900,000 HP notebook PCs

PALO ALTO, Calif., June 25 (UPI) -- California computer firm Hewlett-Packard released a program on Friday to fix a memory problem in 900,000 notebook computers.

The computers contain a defective component, a memory module that could crash or lock up the computers, InformationWeek.com reported.

The modules are made by Infineon Techologies, Micron Technology, Samsung, and Winbond Electronics, and were used in HP and Compaq computers that shipped last year.

Computers in stores or being offered for sale through other channels are not affected by the problem, a HP representative said.

HP discovered the problems during routine tests.

Customers can go to HP's Web site and obtain a tool there to test their computers for the flaw. Those who discover their computers have the defect can e-mail HP, which will send a replacement component.

The HP notebook models affected include the Compaq Evo Notebook N610c, Compaq Evo Notebook N610v, Compaq Evo Notebook N620c, Compaq Evo Notebook N800c, Compaq Evo Notebook N800v, Compaq Evo Notebook N800w, Compaq Evo Notebook N1000c, Compaq Evo Notebook N1000v, Compaq Presario 1500, Compaq Presario 2800, Compaq Presario x1000, Compaq Presario x1200, HP Compaq Business Notebook nx7000, and the HP Pavilion zt3000.
