U.S. stocks close virtually unchanged

NEW YORK, June 16 (UPI) -- Last hour buying helped U.S. stocks erase earlier losses Wednesday, but the indexes were virtually unchanged at close.

The blue-chip Dow Jones industrial average slipped 0.85 points, or 0.01 percent, to close at 10,379.58 on a trading volume of 1.34 billion shares.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite index edged up 2.63 points, or 0.13 percent, to close at 1,998.23 on 1.29 billion shares. The Standard and Poor's 500-stock index gained 1.59 points, or 0.14 percent, to close at 1,133.6.

In the bond market, the 10-year Treasury note fell about $3.75 for each $1,000 invested, to yield 4.728 percent.

Overseas, the U.S. dollar was mixed. It traded at 110.07 against the Japanese yen, down from 111.14. The euro eased against the dollar to $1.2008 from $1.2068.

In other market action, stocks ended higher in London, Paris, Frankfurt, Milan, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Spain, Portugal, Belgium and Zurich. Stocks also rose in Tokyo, China, Hong Kong, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand.
