U.K. upholds complaint against G5 claim

LONDON, June 12 (UPI) -- British regulators have upheld a complaint against the Apple Corp. over the U.S. firm's claim its Power Mac G5 is the world's fastest personal computer.

The Advertising Standards Authority said the G5 was not the fastest computer "in all circumstances for all applications," the BBC reported Saturday.

The authority said there were three objections to claims in the ad: the machine was "the world's fastest" personal computer; that it was "the first" with a 64-bit processor; and that "the systems built around the G5 can shatter the 4-gigabyte memory ceiling that limits every other PC on Earth."

The first objection was sustained through independent tests comparing the G5 with the Dell Dimension 8300 and the Dell Precision 650 running various programs.

The authority, however, did not sustain the other two complaints, in effect agreeing with Apple's claims the G5 is the first with a 64-bit processor and that it holds more than 4 gigabytes of memory.

The newest G5 comes with dual 64-bit PowerPC processors as standard, with speeds ranging from 1.8GHz to 2.5GHz.
