DETROIT, May 27 (UPI) -- Ford is considering launching a new super-powerful V-8 engine that would challenge Chrysler's brawny 345-horsepower Hemi engine revived two years ago.
Internal company documents obtained by the Detroit News said Ford engineers have been talking to suppliers about components for a 6.2-liter V-8 code-named Hurricane for its best-selling F-150 pickup.
The new V-8 engine would dwarf the 300-horsepower 5.4 liter Triton V-8, currently Ford's largest engine, as well as Chrysler's popular 5.7-liter Hemi engine.
"In trucks it's all about bragging rights," an industry analysis told the News.
Auto analysis say the big V-8 project signals Ford has recovered after massive cost-cutting. The world's No. 2 automaker lost $6.4 billion in 2001 and 2002.
Ford is developing 11 new engines and transmissions as it updates its product line.
