BANGKOK, May 10 (UPI) -- Surging aviation fuel prices may result in Thailand's airlines raising fares, however, some fear airfare price increases will hurt tourism.
Members of the Board of Airline Representatives, a group of almost all international carriers that operate in Thailand, are scheduled to meet this week to discuss what action to take concerning rising fuel prices.
The airlines may impose a fuel surcharge, a practice adopted after the start of the war in Iraq a year ago.
To date, only one airline operating in Thailand has added a fuel surcharge, the Bangkok Post reported.
Thai Airways International said its fuel bill rose 11 percent in the six-month period prior to March 31.
"The time has probably come for airlines to decide to raise fares and charges in order to survive," one executive told the Post.
