Argentina's economy in recovery

BUENOS AIRES, April 20 (UPI) -- Argentina's economy is expected to show signs of a dramatic recovery following several years of hard times, news sources reported Tuesday.

Figures released on Monday showed industrial production continued to improve in March, part of an ongoing trend, the Financial Times reported.

The good news on Argentina's economic front comes as Undersecretary of the U.S. Treasury John Taylor is scheduled to meet with government officials to discuss efforts to restructure $100 billion in public debt currently in default.

Argentina's economy collapsed in January 2002 following years of recession. A banking freeze at the time prompted widespread deadly protests and the resignation of then President Fernando de la Rua. Shortly thereafter, Argentina defaulted on its debt, sending the economy into further depths of despair.

Some 15 percent of Argentines are currently unemployed and around half of the nation's 36 million live below the poverty line.
