BAE announces more layoffs

LONDON, April 8 (UPI) -- BAE Systems, the British defense company, says it plans to cut another 1,000 jobs over the next two years,

The jobs will be trimmed in the air systems division at Warton and Samlesbury in Lancashire, BAE said. The announcement comes one week after releasing plans for 760 job cutbacks. The BAE shipyard at Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, will bear the brunt of that one.

It is expected that 500 jobs will be lost this year with around half of those being on-site sub-contractors, the London Telegraph said. The remainder will go by next year.

The air systems division, involved in projects including the Joint Strike Fighter programm and the Hawk jet trainer, employs around 10,000 people at sites in Woodford, Cheshire, and Brough, East Yorkshire.
