Xerox faces class-action lawsuit

BOSTON, March 26 (UPI) -- A Boston judge has recommended class-action status for a discrimination lawsuit brought against Xerox by six African-American employees.

The lawsuit, filed three years ago by six Xerox workers against the Stanford, Conn., company, charges race discrimination and retaliation.

The new class certification by U.S. District Judge John Gleeson of Boston paves the way for all African-American sales employees employed by Xerox from Feb. 1, 1997, to the present to be added to the lawsuit.

That number could be as many as 1,000 workers, plaintiffs lawyers estimated.

At the time the lawsuit was filed in 2001, Xerox maintained the company has "well established and well recognized tradition of valuing diversity in the work place" and that its commitment to diversity "has never wavered."
