Coke postpones European Dasani debut

LONDON, March 25 (UPI) -- Coca-Cola has postponed indefinitely plans to market Dasani bottled water in Europe after last week's recall of the product in England.

Coke's abrupt decision came in response to negative publicity over its failed British launch of Dasani, the Wall Street Journal said. The product was pulled back after tests found excessive levels of bromate, a chemical that can increase the risk of cancer with long-term exposure.

Coke said the excessive bromate came from calcium chloride added to the water to meet a British legal requirement for calcium in all bottled water.

The event also stirred up memories of a contamination scare in France and Belgium in 1999 involving Coca-Cola, which triggered the company's largest recall ever. It took months to build back sales after that incident.
