DETROIT, March 16 (UPI) -- General Motors is boosting the safety of its larger vans beginning with the 2005 model year, the Detroit News reported Tuesday.
GM is making electronic stability control available on its 2005 12-passenger vans.
Last year GM said it would first offer stability control as standard equipment on its 15-passenger GMC Savana and Chevrolet Express vans.
Ford Motor will make electronic stability control available on its 2006 15-passenger vans, along with similar technology to prevent rollovers.
U.S. safety officials and consumer advocates have criticized larger vans because they've been linked to numerous rollovers, including some that have been fatal.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has twice issued consumer warnings about van safety while the National Transportation Safety Board has recommended vans be equipped with electronic stability control.
