HP sets up call center in India

NEW DELHI, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- Hewlett-Packard has set up a call center in India's southern Bangalore city to provide support to the U.S. customers of HP cameras and personal computers.

The Bangalore call center has not led to any loss of U.S. jobs, HP spokeswoman Monica Sarkar said.

"The work was already being done outside the U.S.," Sarkar said. She added the move gives HP greater control over the quality of its support service.

Not all of HP's support work is based abroad. HP supports English-speaking customers in the United States through a network of about 4,000 employees from partner companies based in countries including the United States and Canada, Sarkar said.

HP is among several companies that have moved a variety of high-skilled tasks to countries such as China and India, which offer English speaking, technically skilled workers at much lower wages.
