CHICAGO, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- Fans of Pixies, Carmarsh and Trinidad may still be able to find their favorites following sale of Chicago's Fannie May Candies to Alpine Confections.
Archibald Candy Corp. Wednesday reached a deal to sell its well-known brands to Utah-based Alpine.
Alpine owns Mrs. Field's, Maxfield's, Harry London, Hallmark Chocolatier, Dolce d'Or and Botticelli.
Kansas City-based Russell Stover Candies Inc. also was a suitor for the 84-year-old Chicago institution.
Archibald said it still plans to close its 70-year-old West Side factory, idling 625 employees, and 228 Fannie May and Fannie Farmer retail stores by next month.
A statement said Alpine might operate some of the retail stores after a review. The Service Employees International Union, representing 400 clerks at Fannie May stores, is demanding workers get severance pay, unused vacation and holiday time, accrued sick time and extended health insurance.
