Coming soon: car TV as good as home TV

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- A Michigan company has introduced a compact, satellite-based TV system for cars at the Las Vegas' Consumer Electronics Show.

Delphi Corp., an auto technology supplier, debuted a satellite TV antenna this week that is so small and thin it mounts between the roofline and the interior headliner of a passenger vehicle, causing no styling issues and keeping the roofline aerodynamically flat, the Detroit Free Press reported Friday.

It's also light enough to fit inside a passenger car, meaning passengers could watch Fox News Channel, HBO or ESPN as they ride to and from work.

It will not be on the market, however, for about two years, at which point it is estimated to cost $2,000.

Despite its small size, Delphi's antenna system is able to track a geostationary satellite 22,000 miles above Earth and deliver high-quality signals to a video display in a moving vehicle.

Delphi announced a partnership this week with satellite radio provider Sirius to develop the first phase of the system within 18 months.

Sirius will program several streaming video channels and deliver them through the system it uses to deliver satellite radio broadcasts.
