NEW YORK, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- All was quiet on Wall Street Wednesday, with volume light and stocks flat ahead of the long holiday weekend.
Stocks held on to most of the gains made in recent weeks, when major indexes climbed to peaks not seen in more than a year.
The Dow Jones industrial average closed down 6.66 or 0.07 percent, at 9,3331.79 on Big Board volume of 1.48 billion shares. But the Nasdaq composite index was up 11.48, or 0.65 percent, at 1,782.13. The Standard & Poor's 500 was up 0.65, or 0.01 percent, at 996.79.
No major economic reports were scheduled for Wednesday.
European stocks ended mostly higher. London's FTSE 100 index was up 29, or 0.69 percent, at 4206.40.
The dollar changed little. The euro was trading at $1.0878, compared with $1.0873 late Tuesday, and the dollar closed at 117.45 yen, compared to 117.29 Tuesday.
