Boeing to cut more jobs

SEATTLE, July 17 (UPI) -- The Boeing Co. says it will cut 4,000 to 5,000 more jobs than previously planned from its commercial airplane division.

The Seattle-based aircraft manufacturer said the cuts will come by the end of the year, as the airline industry remains mired in its worst downturn in history.

Boeing spokesman Bill Cogswell said the job cuts will be realized by both attrition and layoffs.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer said the announcement is the latest evidence that Boeing -- and the entire U.S. commercial aviation industry -- remain stuck in a deep and prolonged slump that could eventually strip as many as 40,000 jobs from Boeing.

Cogswell said 5,000 cuts had already been planned for this year. The new job furloughs will come on top of that.
