Fear & stress commonplace in the workplace

NORTH HAVEN, Conn., July 14 (UPI) -- The national Attitudes in the American Workplace survey finds fear about world events and stress about the economy are commonplace.

The ninth annual survey shows 43 percent of employees say people in their workplace express fear or anxiety about national or world events at least several times a week; 33 percent observed an increase in anxiety or stress-related physical ailments in their workplace during the last year; and 27 percent report an increase in emotional problems.

Harris Interactive conducted the survey for The Marlin Company, a workplace communications firm. The results are based on 752 interviews among full-time and part-time workers, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.6 percentage points.

Marlin President Frank Kenna III said, "Interestingly, employees report most stress is coming from outside the workplace, but they bring it with them on the job regardless of the source. Managers must find a way to deal with these outside factors if they want to have a smoother-running workplace."
