Beanbag chairs recalled

WASHINGTON, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- Baseline Design of Linwood, Pa., Tuesday recalled about 30,000 beanbag chairs that can be zipped open allowing access to small polystyrene beads that can be inhaled by a small child.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission said the beads pose a choking hazard to young children. At least two children were able to open the zipper and handle the plastic beans. One required medical attention after inhaling the beads.

The beanbag chairs have 12-inch double zippers and come in designs including a football shape, a baseball shape, a basketball shape and a smiley face. Other chairs are solid green, yellow, pink and blue neon.

The beanbag chairs were sold at Wal-Mart stores in the Northeast United States from September 1999 through December 1999 for about $30. The chairs have a tag reading "Made by Baseline Design."

Consumers are advised to check whether they can unzip the beanbag chair. Baseline Design will provide a replacement beanbag chair if the zipper can be operated freely. The manufacturer can be reached at 800-497-3626.

The firm previously ran ads in Northeast newspapers to inform consumers of the recall.
