Chrysler Sebring convertibles recalled

DETROIT, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- Recall notices are going out to the owners of 88,000 Chrysler Sebring convertibles because a sticky throttle could cause unintended acceleration and possibly result in an accident.

The 1996 and 1997 models have 2.5-liter, six-cylinder engines.

"On certain convertible model vehicles equipped with 2.5L V6 engines, the throttle control cable can fray causing the throttle to bind or stick. This can result in a loss of throttle control increasing risk of a crash," the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said.

DaimlerChyrsler had received 18 reports of sticking throttles on Sebring convertibles, with one accident linked to the problem. No deaths of injuries have been reported.

Authorized dealers will replace the throttle cable assembly free of charge.

Chrysler began sending recall notices to vehicle owners on Aug. 5.

In a separate action, Kia Motors America Inc. recalled 25,000 1998 model Sephia passenger cars with 36,000 or less miles to fix an electrical contact problem that could render hazard lights and turn signals inoperative. Dealers will replace the hazard switch.
