U.S. stocks mostly flat Friday, but still up 3% this week

May 22 (UPI) -- U.S. stocks slid in early trading Friday after early gains turned around -- but the Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq still gained at least 3 percent this week.

After an early slide Friday morning, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained back its losses for the day, closing down 0.1 percent at 24,465.16. It gained 3.3 percent for the week, its best weekly performance since early April.

The S&P 500 and Nasdaq followed a similar performance for the day and week, with the former gaining 0.2 percent for the day and the latter rising 0.4 percent. Both finished up by more than 3 percent for the week.

The Dow lost about 100 points in trading on Thursday.

The New York Stock Exchange will be closed Monday for Memorial Day.
