Sept. 13 (UPI) -- A large snake caught on camera slithering into a New York storm drain was rescued by a local reptile enthusiast with help from a police officer.

Witness Bridget Avonne Moschetti captured video Sunday when she spotted a large, non-native snake slithering into a storm drain in the Nanuet area of Clarkstown.

The video came to the attention of John Tarrant, who launched an effort to capture the sizable serpent with help from his wife, Elizabeth Selchick Tarrant, and an officer with the Clarkstown Police Department.

Tarrant was able to reach into the drain and extract the snake, which is believed to be a pet that escaped or was abandoned by its owner.

Tarrant said he has several friends who own snakes, and he would find a new home for the reptile.
