Jan. 9 (UPI) -- A safari-goer in Botswana captured video of a tenacious buffalo escaping from a pride of hungry lions by swimming out to find its friends.

The video, recorded in Chobe National Park, shows the buffalo struggling to defend itself after becoming surrounded by lionesses.

The big cats lunge at the buffalo, but it successfully fends them off and makes a run for it.

Two of the lionesses manage to jump on the buffalo's back as it runs into the shallow water, but one of the predators gives up when it starts to swim into deeper waters.

The buffalo, with one lioness still on its back, swims through the water until it comes to a group of buffalo on shore.

The buffalo walks out of the water and its comrades chase away the remaining lioness.

The filmer said a male lion that was accompanying the hunting lionesses "wimped out about getting wet."
