Stars sign Hirsch

By   |   Aug. 14, 2002

DALLAS, Aug. 14 -- The Dallas Stars Wednesday signed goaltender Corey Hirsch, who has played one NHL game the last three years, to a one-year contract.

Terms of the deal were not released.

Hirsch split the last season between the Portland Pirates and Philadelphia Phantoms in the American Hockey League, going 8-15-5 with a 2.69 goals-against-average.

Hirsch, 30, has a 34-44-14 record and 3.14 GAA in 106 career NHL games with the New York Rangers, Vancouver Canucks and Washington Capitals. He has not played in the NHL since March 11, 2001, when he replaced Washington's Olaf Kolzig and stopped all eight shots he faced to earn a win against the Ottawa Senators.

Dallas acquired goalie Ron Tugnutt and a 2002 second-round draft pick from the Columbus Blue Jackets for a 2002 first-round draft pick in June after the rights to two-time Vezina Trophy winner Ed Belfour were dealt to Nashville.

Belfour, who spent five seasons with the Stars, signed a two-year contract with Toronto.
