Blazers 117, Spurs 103

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Clyde Drexler scored 15 points and blocked four shots and Terry Porter dished out 10 assists all in Portland's 49- point first quarter Sunday, and the Trail Blazers coasted to a 117-103 victory over the San Antonio Spurs.

The Blazers, 11-0, are the only undefeated team in the NBA. They have won 15 regular season games in a row going back to last season.

Portland was paced by three players with 20 or more points. Center Kevin Duckworth led the way with 22 points while Porter had 21 and Drexler added 20.

San Antonio's David Robinson led all scorers with 26 points.

Without question, the difference in this game was the first quarter. The Blazers probably have never played better than they did in that period. It was even more impressive that the effort came against a team as good as the Spurs, who saw their season record drop to 7-3.

Portland dominated the Spurs in every aspect of the game in that period. They hit 88 percent of their field goal attempts and all five of their 3-point attempts, which allowed Portland to score a team-record 49 points.

In the process, Portland limited the Spurs to 18 points in the period, which was the same number of points the Blazers scored in the period off San Antonio's turnovers.

The Blazers were able to extend their lead almost every trip down the floor in that quarter, and finally pushed their advantage to 31 when Cliff Robinson hit a 3-pointer with five seconds left.

However, Portland was anything but stellar in the second quarter as they hit only 24 percent of their shots and let San Antonio close the gap to 64-50 at half.

That helped the Spurs come out determined to start the second half, and an 11-4 run cut Portland's lead to 68-61, which was as close the Spurs had been since early in the first period.

Still, the Spurs were only able to trim 2 points off Portland's lead by the end of the period, despite 9 points by David Robinson, which doubled his first-half output.

In the final period, the Blazers regained some of the momentum they had established in the first period. Danny Ainge opened the stanza with a three-pointer that upped Portland's lead to 92-77. Four minutes later, Cliff Robinson hit a jumper that pushed the Blazers' lead back to 20 at 101-81.

But the Spurs still weren't finished. From there they went on a 16-7 run that was capped by a Rod Strickland layup and cut Portland's lead to 108-97.

However, that's where it ended for the Spurs, who were only able to trade baskets the rest of the way.
