DENVER -- Terry Cummings scored 28 points and David Robinson and Willie Anderson added 26 each Tuesday night to lead the San Antonio Spurs to a sweep of their first-round playoff series with a 131-120 victory over the Denver Nuggets.

Rod Strickland added 18 points and David Wingate scored 14 off the bench for the Spurs. Alex English led the Nuggets with 24 points and Fat Lever added 20.

The San Antonio franchise won its first five-game NBA playoff series in history. The Spurs lost to the Lakers in 1986 and 1988 and to the Nuggets in 1985.

The three consecutive losses to the Spurs left the Nuggets winless in NBA playoff games since May 14, 1988, dropping nine straight in three-game sweeps against Dallas in 1988 and Phoenix in 1989.

The Nuggets shot only 30 percent from the floor in the first quarter as the Spurs built a 31-27 behind Strickland's six points.

San Antonio's lead grew to 42-29 before English made Denver's first field goal in the second quarter at 8:26, marking nearly five minutes since Michael Adams' 15-footer near the end of the first quarter.

Robinson scored 12 points in the second quarter to give him 18 points and seven rebounds at halftime.

The Spurs shot over 57 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Nuggets 30-21 in forging a 65-53 halftime lead.

Lever grabbed in offensive rebound and put it back to cap an 8-2 Denver run midway through the third quarter that cut San Antonio's lead to 76-72. But Anderson and Cummings combined for 17 San Antonio points over the next 6:01 as the Spurs rebuilt their lead to 91-78.

The Nuggets climbed within 97-92 early in the fourth period and within 121-118 late, but Cummings and Anderson made key baskets and Strickland and Wingate converted 7 of 8 free throws to seal the victory.
