AUGUSTA, Maine -- A judge sentenced a former FBI agent to nine months in prison and two more years of house arrest for sexually assaulting a 12-year-old neighbor girl.

Kennebec County Superior Court Judge Donald G. Alexander imposed the sentence Thursday on John H. Kenoyer, 65, the FBI's former Augusta bureau chief.

Kenoyer was charged early last year. He pleaded guilty in June to nine charges, including unlawful sexual contact, assault and gross sexual misconduct.

Kenoyer had jumped bail and disappeared in March 1986, not long after he was indicted. He surrendered early this summer.

'I was just so humiliated and embarrassed that I just couldn't face it,' Kenoyer told Alexander in explaining why he had jumped bail.

The house arrest means Kenoyer will have to stay at his home for two years, except for one three-hour period each week and one week per year in which he can go elsewhere. Besides the prison term and the house arrest, Alexander sentenced Kenoyer to six years of probation and 1,000 hours of community service work.

Alexander said Kenoyer is not a threat to society, is unlikely to repeat his offenses and would not benefit from a longer prison term.
