Benefits consultants complete merger

NEW YORK -- Two of the country's largest employee-benefits consulting firms said Friday they have merged in a transaction the companies said was worth about $45 million.

William M. Mercer-Meidinger Inc. and A.S. Hansen Inc. said the combined organization, William M. Mercer-Meidinger-Hansen Inc., would be the largest firm of its kind in the United States.

The two companies provide consulting services to employers on benefits, pension and compensation matters.

Mercer-Meidinger-Hanson has about 3,000 employees, including 340 actuaries, and offices in 48 U.S. cities. It is a subsidiary of William M. Mercer Inc., a consulant operating in 19 countries and itself a subsidiary of Marsh & McLennan Cos., the giant insurance and financial services conglomerate.
