OTTAWA -- Justice Minister Jean Chretien says opposition MPs are obstructing the work of the parliamentary committee studying proposed amendments to sexual offenses in the criminal code including rape and child pornography.

'It's quite evident they (opposition members) have created obstruction because the bill has been before the committee for two years but they never even filed one amendment,' Chretien told reporters outside the House of Commons Thursday.

He charged Conservative and NDP members of the committee had been simply challenging the wording of his proposed amendments without suggesting alternative words.

Chretien was also critical of the huge volume of child pornography material police had submitted as evidence to committee members.

'I don't need a truckload of that material to make up my mind.'
