A smoky one-alarm fire raced through a home early...

NEWARK, N.J. -- A smoky one-alarm fire raced through a home early today, killing a 3-year-old girl and injuring six members of her family, police said.

A police spokesman said the blaze was reported shortly before 2 a.m. and the cause was under investigation.

A 3-year-old girl, identified only as a member of the Hester family, was pronounced dead at St. Michael's Hospital. Another victim, Barbara Hester, 8, was admitted to intensive care and treated for smoke inhalation.

Owen Hester, 6, was in critical condition at Beth Israel Hospital.

Four other members of the family, Maryanne, 44, Susan, 20, Edward, 12 and Timothy, 4, were in guarded condition in an intensive care unit at College Hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.
