Work started on huge excavation for Gate Bridge

By United Press   |   January 05, 1933

SAN FRANCISCO -- Two overall-clad steam shovel operators today swung the jaws of their ponderous machines into the ground at Lime Point, and the first dirt was moved in construction of the Golden Gate bridge without ceremony.

Speeches will be made and hands shaken at formal dedication ceremonies later. Construction engineers today were more interested in starting an excavation that, when completed, will be large enough to swallow a skyscraper.

Nine months will be needed to complete the task of constructing the anchorage.
