May 14 (UPI) -- Indian Parliament member Shashi Tharoor was charged Monday with involvement in his wife's death four years ago, Delhi police announced.
Police ruled the 2014 death of Sunanda Pushkar in a Delhi hotel was a suicide, the charging documents indicated.
Monday, Tharoor was charged under Indian statutes on abetment and spousal cruelty. The couple were married in 2010.
The charging sheet Monday ran more than 3,000 pages.
Tharoor is a member of the Lok Sabha, the lower house of India's parliament, representing Thiruvananthapuram.
In social media messages, Tharoor referred to the charges as "preposterous" and questioned police methods used to indict him.
Tharoor said he will "vigorously" contest the charges.
The hotel suite where her death occurred was sealed for investigation and reopened just last month.
1/2 I have taken note of the filing of this preposterous charge sheet &intend to contest it vigorously. No one who knew Sunanda believes she would ever have committed suicide, let alone abetment on my part. If this is conclusion arrived at after 4+ yrs of investigation, (contd.)
