Baby boy born aboard Doctors Without Borders rescue boat

GENEVA, Switzerland, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- A baby boy was born aboard a Doctors Without Borders migrant rescue boat in the Mediterranean Sea to parents fleeing Libya.

The boy's name is Newman Otas. He was born to parents Faith and Otas aboard the Aquarius, which is operated by Doctors Without Borders.

"Faith was already having contractions when she left Libya and was terrified she'd give birth on the rubber boat," Doctors Without Borders said in a statement. "The gorgeous little guy was born in international waters so his nationality is still under discussion."

Doctors Without Borders midwife Jonquil Nicholl, who helped deliver Newman Otas, said Faith had "a very normal birth in dangerously abnormal conditions."

"Welcome to this crazy world Newman Otas," the Swiss-based organization, known in Europe as Médecins Sans Frontières, added.

The Italian Coast Guard estimates 2,300 migrants were rescued in 18 sea missions on Sunday.

Libya has been in chaos since the 2011 civil war, when longtime ruler Moammar Gadhafi was killed by rebels backed by the United States and NATO.
