KABUL, Afghanistan, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- At least two people died Thursday morning when an explosive-laden car rammed a NATO convoy in Kabul, Afghanistan's diplomatic section.

Near the Turkish Embassy and the city's Zanbaq Square, a suicide bomber in a small car targeted a Turkish Embassy vehicle. The driver of the struck vehicle, a Turkish national, was killed, as was the suicide bomber, Afghan Deputy Minister Gen. Ayoub Salanghi confirmed. Some media reports mentioned a third person, an Afghan national walking on the street, was also killed.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, and although a Turkish convoy was struck, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said in a social media post the "target of the attack was (a) U.S. forces convoy, not any embassy or citizens of any other country."

The convoy was to escort turkey's NATO ambassador, Ismail Aramaz, who was waiting to be picked up, the British Broadcasting Corp. reported.

Kabul's diplomatic area has been the site of a number of bombings, most recently in January, when a suicide bomber struck a European Union police vehicle.
