KABUL, Afghanistan, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- Three American contractors and an Afghan national were shot to death in an incident Thursday at the Kabul, Afghanistan, airport, U.S. military officials said.

An International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) statement acknowledged the deaths without mentioning nationality, saying, "We can confirm that there was a shooting incident at North Kabul International Airport complex 29 January at approximately 6:40 p.m.", but a U.S. official said the three were Americans working for the Defense Dept. The official added the assailant was wearing the uniform of the Afghan police, but it was unclear if he was actually a member.

It was also unclear if the Afghan national mentioned as a victim was the attacker, who was shot to death by the airport's security team. ISAF typically does not report the nationality of victims. No identities were revealed.

The shootings occurred in the civilian portion of the airport.
