Spain, Morocco conduct joint operation to stop female IS recruitment

An estimated 100 Spaniards and 2,000 Moroccans have traveled to Iraq and Syria to join IS.

MADRID, Dec. 16 (UPI) -- Authorities in Morocco and Spain have detained seven individuals on suspicion of involvement in the recruitment of women to join the Islamic State.

The dawn operation captured two alleged IS recruiters, one female and one male, in the Spanish enclave of Melilla in North Africa.

Moroccan security forces took cell leaders in Castillejos into custody, while two others were seized in the nearby Spanish enclave of Ceuta.

A seventh person was arrested in Barcelona.

Four women and one minor were among the arrested.

An estimated 100 Spaniards and 2,000 Moroccans have traveled to Iraq and Syria to join IS.

Tuesday's joint operation follows the Aug. 3 arrest of two females, aged 14 and 19, at the Beni Enzar border in Melilla suspected of trying to join the Islamic State.
